MANILA - A 6.1 magnitude quake hit the Philippines region early Thursday, US scientists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The epicentre of the quake was 141 kilometers (88 miles) east-southeast of Pandan, at a depth of 24 kilometres, a report from the USGS said.

The quake hit at 2:49 am (1849 GMT Wednesday) the report added.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately issue a tsunami warning.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
